Impact of Globalization on Learning & Development in Hospitality Industry


The worldwide movement toward economic, financial, trade, and communications integration.

Globalization implies the opening of local and nationalistic perspectives to a broader outlook of an interconnected and interdependent world with free transfer of capital, goods, and labour markets, to maximize returns and benefit for the common good across national frontiers. Globalization is a term used to describe all commercial transactions, in general, (private and governmental, sales, investments, logistics and transport) which occur between two or more regions, countries and nations beyond their political borders (Radebaugh & Sullivan, 2007).


The fusion of cultural and economic systems is what propels globalization, or globalisation as it is known in some areas of the world. Increased international engagement, integration, and dependency are encouraged by this convergence, and in certain situations are even required. The globe is becoming increasingly globalized as nations and regions are politically, culturally, and economically more intertwined.

Economic globalization is fueled by policies that support free trade, open borders, and international cooperation. They give companies access to less expensive labour markets, cheaper raw material and component markets, and larger, expanding global markets in which to sell their products.

The companies are no longer imprisoned in their borders and can implement a wide range of business activities around the world. Many companies are present in markets around the world, procured their raw produce or conduct research and development worldwide.

We frequently consider globalization to be an economic and financial phenomenon as a result of trade developments and financial exchanges. Yet, it covers a lot more ground than just the flow of products, services, or capital. Some examples of globalization are below,

Sociological globalization: Along with the connectivity and interdependence of events and their outcomes, information moves relatively quickly. Humans frequently relocate, blending and merging various communities.

Technological globalization: The phenomenon whereby millions of individuals are connected to one another through the power of the internet and websites like Facebook, Instagram, Skype, or Youtube.

Geographic globalization: The continually evolving hierarchy and a new arrangement of the world's various areas. In addition, with the exception of a few nations that require visas, travelling the world with little to no restriction is now accessible thanks to the advancements in transportation and aviation.

As globalization picks up speed and becomes more pervasive, more chances are opening up for businesses to compete on global marketplaces. To make their companies worldwide competitive businesses, the managers create and modify internationalization strategies. Based on global operations, managers try to coordinate supply, production, marketing, and other activities. It is difficult to organize a company internationally; it involves strategic positioning, organizational prowess, a high level of coordination and integration, attention to the requirements of various markets, and the adoption of standard procedures. Formulate a strong international vision, allocation of scarce resources in the World, participation in the major markets, implementation of global partnerships, and involvement in competitive activities in response to global rivals and establish activities that add additional value on a global level (Cavusgil, Yeniyurt & Townsend, 2004).

A new type of learning is required in light of the globalization of the economy and the demands it has placed on the labor force in hospitality industry. This learning must improve employees' capacities to access, evaluate, adopt, and apply knowledge, think critically, exercise sound judgment, and work collaboratively to make sense of novel situations. The purpose of learning is no longer simply to communicate a body of knowledge, but to educate how to learn, problem-solve/synthesize the old with the new.



Produces an increased quantity of scientifically and technically trained persons

As was already mentioned, the hospitality business depends heavily on knowledge, possibly even more so than on any other more conventional components of hospitality. In the age of globalization, certain businesses require highly skilled workers within the industry.

Encourages teamwork among employees

Closely related to the last point, is the need for employees in globalised enterprises to be able to work closely in teams. Working in teams requires employees to develop skills in group dynamics, compromise, debate, persuasion, organisation, leadership and management skills. Most organizations and programmes are set up to do the opposite, to force employees to think only of themselves and their own personal development, perhaps with some very limited group work.

Blurs the line between both mental and physical labor

The Fordist­Taylorist growth paradigm, as previously mentioned, emphasized clear distinctions between mental and physical labor. The new innovation-mediated paradigm, on the other hand, values the intellectual contributions of every employee and calls for a far more comprehensive approach to the hospitality operation. In reality, many Information age-focused industrial facilities and other materials are so similar that most spectators would have a very hard time telling them apart.


Conclusion

The phrase "International Company" is now extremely popular, reflecting actual business dealings and wide-ranging interactions between numerous individuals from various cultures and thought processes. They are connected by their shared need for development, a quick exchange of tools and resources, and an intricate web of relationships.

At present with globalization, the hospitality industry employees’ learning and development are not completely known and difficult to predict because of the vast changes that occur within technology and how learning and development are viewed from organization to organization.
