Advantages and Disadvantages of Learning and Development

Many hospitality organizations offer learning programs that teach and help employees develop essential workplace skills. The development of skilled, motivated staff can be aided through learning, but there may also be some difficulties for the employer. Understanding the benefits and drawbacks of such programs is essential if you work in human resources or are otherwise involved in planning skills learning at your company. In this article, we define skills training and review its main benefits and drawbacks.

Even though the emphasis on development might vary, successful learning programs typically have a few traits. Employees can be expected to display this skill later on because, among other things, they have clearly defined and quantifiable goals. Another reason is that the program's graduates have abilities that are in line with the objectives of the business, which benefits the expansion of the latter. Also, by providing those with the resources they need to thrive and fostering personal growth, these programs increase employees' engagement with the company.

ADVANTAGES

Employee learning & development can have a number of benefits for the company as well as the personnel. They consist of,

1. Productivity increases:

Employee learning & development improves productivity by increasing employee effectiveness. Employees achieve both quantity and quality performance because they are properly instructed. Productivity is the amount of work a worker can perform in a given amount of time. In general, increased productivity is a good thing because it shows that workers are completing crucial tasks on schedule. By giving workers the resources they need to fill in any gaps in their competencies, skill development can increase productivity. A skills training program, for instance, can give corporate personnel a thorough rundown of a new piece of software's features and how to utilize them if they are not familiar with it. With this information, the staff may utilize the product as intended without experiencing any delays due to confusion. Filling knowledge and ability gaps can also reduce frustrations brought on by using new tools. This, in turn, may support the previously mentioned employee engagement and job satisfaction.

2. Increased engagement

The feeling of connection a person has to their job and the company they work for is referred to as engagement. By highlighting the employer's commitment to their achievement, skill development can boost employee engagement. An increase in job satisfaction, appreciation, and the drive to perform well can result if a person believes that the training will also increase their chances of development.

3. Updated with the latest technology

Since the sector is always evolving, it is crucial for employees to be aware of the most recent developments. New technology emerges relatively frequently, therefore a one-time training session would not be sufficient. Regular training sessions are held to ensure that the firm is utilizing the most recent technologies.

4. Work Quality increases

Similarly to this, improving an employee's knowledge and skill set might result in better output. Several skill-development programs put a strong emphasis on educating staff members on how to execute particular tasks or how to do them better. They are more likely to be aware of errors and produce better work if they are aware of new methods or advice for completing their tasks.

5. Increasing employee satisfaction

An organization should invest in training since those that do so are said to have satisfied its staff. Employees must receive training that is pertinent to them and on topics about which they may educate themselves. If the training is tiresome, dull, and ineffective, the results will be. Employees that have received adequate training are also sent to several conferences and seminars, which is advantageous to them. Employees who receive training are able to learn about a practical component of their jobs and are happy with the work they accomplish.

DISADVANTAGES

1. Increase stress

Stress can be caused by training staff for an excessive amount of hours in order to maintain them aware of the most recent trends and up-to-date in their particular field. Attending a skills training program can feel like a barrier for workers who are trying to fulfil deadlines. They could become preoccupied with the tasks they should be finishing rather than entering the program with the intention of learning and growing. Therefore, it's crucial to let workers know in advance that any productivity lags during training sessions are acceptable. This can lessen stress and encourage a desire to study. They may do less well at work as a result of their stress.

2. Loss of interest

When training sessions last for a long time, the participants become disinterested and bored. Therefore, data and information are not kept for workers who do not listen. Employees lose interest in training sessions when the same information or theory is repeated continually. The other significant drawback of employee training is that, given the busy daily schedule, there might not be enough time for staff training.

3. Time requirements

Many hospitality companies provide employees with extremely little time, which might not help them become knowledgeable or productive. The trainer typically sped through the key components of the task that the employees should comprehend because they had very little time. If this occurs, it might be essential to undertake extra training to fix the initial attempt, which would require more time and money to invest. It's crucial to carefully organize these projects in order to prevent this. Make the necessary resource allocations to make sure that staff are given accurate information and instructive materials.

Conclusion

A number of the benefits, drawbacks, and significance of staff learning & Development have already been discussed. Because of the numerous advantages it offers, staff training is required and can be made to occur in all hospitality organizations. The improvement in productivity and organization is the finest result of staff training. By offering the organization high-quality training, the organization develops a unique reputation. Therefore, higher officials and managers need to pay attention to this training and mandate that it be provided in organizations at necessary sessions.

Not every employee comes to the company with the same amount of talent. Therefore, it is necessary to give them quality training on a regular basis in order to improve their understanding of specialized work. Only staff training can motivate people to excel and take extraordinary actions in their line of work.

  2. This is Good article. Also there are some firms that make employees to sign NDA and agreement before giving them trainings. this is mainly to avoid the employee resigning after getting the training.

    1. Yes Lahiru, I agreed with your point. Some businesses also demand that new hires sign an NDA. if the employee has access to confidential data regarding the company's L&D strategies. Some businesses will require all employees to sign the agreement, while others will only apply it to certain departments or categories of workers.

Before talks between a startup seeking money and possible investors, NDAs may also be employed. In these situations, the NDA is designed to stop rivals from learning their trade secrets or future company plans for L&D.

    1. Hi Gawri. Thank you! Yes. More money is spent on training and retraining the current workforce than on high turnover. They provide superior customer service and raise the organization's productivity. Training and development are consistently thought to be areas where budget cuts are made. However, hotels and restaurants are now aware of how inadequate training affects workers' productivity and efficiency.

An undermotivated employee never provides clients with great work. In order to close the gap between job requirements and employee present specifications, additional training models should be designed.

  6. Excellent article! Nowadays, technology has become an indispensable part of our daily routine, and it's crucial to evaluate its pros and cons. According to Statista's data (2021), the number of people worldwide using the internet has reached over 4.9 billion, indicating the immense influence of technology on our lives. Despite the numerous advantages of technology, it's essential to acknowledge its potential disadvantages. One of the most significant drawbacks of technology is its negative impact on our social interactions. As Kirschner and Karpinski (2010) pointed out, excessive use of technology can lead to a decrease in face-to-face communication, ultimately resulting in a decline in social skills.

    1. Hi! It is not at all surprising that knowing principles has a lasting effect. It's also not encouraging to learn that the market directly adopts them or that they influence developments in digital learning. In-person workshops are analogous to online courses. Face-to-face training sessions are heavily incorporated into e-learning modules (such as their objectives, materials, activities, milestones, and assessments). Additionally, learning-focused social networks offer a forum for debate, which is something educators have long desired. There are several instances of how digital learning borrows ideas from conventional methods of instruction. :)

    1. Hi Hadhil, one of the early uses of learning technology to overcome the richness/reach trade-off was e-learning.

Over the past 20 years, e-learning has been extended by the growing granularization of formal education. Although this has made it slightly simpler to acquire educational materials, it ignores a major problem since e-learning and "micro-learning" are still considered formal learning strategies. Rich media learning solutions and video-based systems with increased bandwidth also support this.
There is no question that when properly applied, these strategies boost the effectiveness of formal education, but they fall short of utilizing learning technology's full potential to produce commercial benefits. L&D must completely embrace informal learning and learning from experience in order to do this.

Challenges Facing Learning & Development in Hospitality Industry

The shift to remote or hybrid working was sparked by the enormous challenges this new business environment presented to the hospitality workplace. Not only does this have an impact on how we work, but it also has a big impact on how we pick up new skills. It presents a number of difficulties for learning and development teams to make sure that workers are completely capable of adjusting to the change that comes with their new work surroundings and rising to the challenge of digitalisation while attempting to realize their own potential. 01.Training Employees in a Hybrid Workplace The new business environment for many organizations has sparked a permanent change in working methods, with people now working from home or combining home and office work. Learning programs must change to match the changing nature of the workplace. Learning from home should be as simple for employees as learning from the office or a training facility, which is a fundamental problem.  Additionally, c...

History Of The Learning & Development

Why should we know about the history of L&D? Aspects of learning and development have been linked to ancient civilizations around the globe. The history of corporate L&D has come a long way over the last 125 years and learning and development have changed dramatically during the last century. Focusing on prehistoric times, instruction was limited to survival skills. Children would pick up skills by watching their parents and other members of the group hunt, gather fruit, fish, or start a fire, and then imitate  them. It  is the earliest and most prevalent type of direct, on-the-job training. In the 5 th century BC, the Chinese philosopher Lao-Tse wrote: “If you tell me, I will listen. If you show me, I will see. But if you let me experience, I will learn.” One of the first learning philosophies is built around this quotation. Confucius and other Chinese philosophers began employing the case study approach after Lao-Tse. In the middle ages the demand for spe...

What is "Learning and Development" (L&D)?

The acquisition and refinement of skills, knowledge, and competencies through a structured process is commonly known as learning and development, which ultimately contributes to an employee's enhanced work performance. Specifically, learning is concerned with the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Development is the broadening and deepening of knowledge in line with one’s development goals. The goal of learning and development is to develop or change the behavior of individuals or groups for the better, sharing knowledge and insights that enable them to do their work better, or cultivate attitudes that help them perform better (Lievens, 2011). When employees undergo proper learning and development process, it improves their skills and knowledge of the job and builds their confidence in their abilities. This will improve their performance and make them work more efficiently and effectively. These improvements will positively affect the productivity of wo...
